Supporting people, our greatest asset, in 2024

Last year, our Group’s ongoing commitment to implementing a range of initiatives focused on fostering a supportive and inclusive workplace culture helped us become a Great Place To Work® following some incredibly positive feedback from an anonymous employee survey carried out across our business, and we were also thrilled that those results recently saw us listed in position 28 among the UK’s Best Workplaces in the medium business category.

We strive to place our people at the forefront of everything we do. It’s a culture that’s fully ingrained in the very fabric of our business thanks to the incredible contributions of our colleagues, whose efforts we were delighted to recap in our inaugural social value report.

We enjoy an industry-leading low level of turnover among our staff, and while there’s not enough space here to give due recognition to all of the wonderful things happening across our teams that has lead to this, I felt it was important to highlight some of the key aspects mentioned in our report that showcase the reasons why people choose to join – and stay - with NRL.

Prioritising health and wellbeing

The wellbeing of those we work with is a non-negotiable priority for us. We firmly believe that a healthy and happy workforce is the key to our success, which is why we’ve implemented a range of measures aimed at safeguarding the physical, mental, and financial health of our colleagues and contractors. From an enhanced parental leave policy to a dedicated health cash plan covering essential medical expenses, we are committed to providing our team members with the necessary support to live their best lives both in and outside of work.

Mental health is another important consideration for us, which is why our team of trained Mental Health First Aiders stands ready to provide support and guidance to any team member in need. Their presence forms part of our efforts to foster an open and supportive environment, where colleagues feel comfortable sharing their issues knowing that their concerns will be heard and that every effort will be made to help alleviate the burden they’re facing.

The extends to the wellbeing of our candidates too, which is why we value our fruitful ongoing partnership with the Lighthouse Charity so highly. The vital services provided by the charity, like on-site visits and 24/7 helpline support, align perfectly with our values and reflect our commitment to making a positive impact where it matters most.

Investing in professional growth

We firmly believe that investing in our colleagues’ training and development is a crucial step towards not just building a skilled and motivated workforce but ensuring that they feel supported in achieving their goals. Our commitment to continuous learning is evident in the range of training programmes and professional development opportunities we offer to our team members.

From technical certifications to leadership training, we provide a diverse array of learning opportunities to suit the needs and career aspirations of every individual within our organisation. We tailor plans to each employee's goals and strengths, ensuring that they receive the guidance and support needed to progress in their careers and excel in their roles.

Building an environment where people want to work

Recognition and rewards are also key components of our Group’s culture. We celebrate achievements and milestones through various means - whether it's a personal gift to show our appreciation or a holiday abroad to recognise exceptional long service, we try to ensure that our employees feel valued and appreciated for their hard work and dedication.

Furthermore, our commitment to diversity and inclusion is woven into the fabric of our organisation. We strive to create a workplace where every individual feels respected and included, from becoming an Inclusive+ Recruiter to promoting women in engineering and actively supporting underrepresented communities, we are committed to creating a workplace that celebrates differences and values the unique contributions of every individual.

We also feel that it’s important to give back beyond the walls of our organisation. Whether it's lifting disability barriers, providing opportunities for service leavers from the Armed Forces community, or collaborating with partners like the Career Transition Partnership to facilitate smooth career transitions for veterans, we’re dedicated to making a positive impact on society at large.

We’re committed to championing the wellbeing and success of our colleagues in everything they do and I’m incredibly grateful to see that commitment reflected in the positive impact it has had on our people, our work environment and those around us.
