JOB TITLE Chief Accountant

MAIN PURPOSE OF ROLE

The Chief Accountant is responsible for managing and overseeing the entire accounting department, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in all financial operations. This leadership role involves developing and implementing financial policies, maintaining financial records, and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders to support strategic decision-making.


KEY MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES (This list is not exhaustive)
  • Oversee daily operations of the accounting department, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, payroll, and financial reporting.
  • Manage month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring accurate and timely financial statements.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain accounting policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and accounting standards (e.g., GAAP, IFRS).
  • Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and adjustments for accuracy and compliance.
  • Prepare and analyse budgets, forecasts, and variance reports to support strategic planning and performance evaluation.
  • Coordinate with external auditors, tax authorities, and regulatory agencies for audits, tax filings, and compliance.
  • Provide financial insights and recommendations to senior management, supporting data-driven decision-making.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff, ensuring continuous professional growth and up-to-date skills.
  • Maintain strong client and stakeholder relationships, ensuring clear and effective communication.
  • Ensure proper handling of payroll taxes, compliance with state and federal tax regulations, and address any compliance issues proactively.

SKILLS

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial management, and relevant standards (e.g., GAAP, IFRS).
  • Leadership and team management skills with the ability to motivate and guide staff.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • High proficiency in accounting software and financial management tools.
  • Attention to detail, integrity, and adaptability.

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 7–10 years of experience in accounting, with at least 3 years in a managerial or supervisory role.
  • Proven experience as a Chief Accountant or in a similar senior accounting role.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, ERP systems) and Microsoft Office Suite.
