When it comes to talent attraction, businesses need to do more than just publish their vacancies on job boards – they need to get social, NRL Director Rebecca Graves tells In-Cumbria business magazine.

Each year I have the privilege of joining other fellow judges to read through the in-Cumbria Business Awards submissions and determine the winners. It’s fascinating to read all about their success and growth, which included Cecile Clark, founder of Littlemissocialmedia (LMS), who was shortlisted for Best New Business.

Millions of people use social media each week to keep up-to-date with friends, as well as following their favourite businesses. When it comes to searching for the next job, people also understand the power of social media to search for vacancies and create a picture of what potential employers have to offer them, looking through the content to gauge the company’s culture and values.

Building social media into your talent attraction strategy

Cecile has been steadily growing a client base of local businesses in Cumbria through her LMS venture, who she supports with social media content and strategy. It’s brilliant to see the success she’s had to date in a relatively short time, so who better to ask to contribute to this discussion on how social media can support recruitment for your business.

Cecile, why should businesses be using social media as part of their talent attraction campaigns?

Because it’s where people are already hanging out—whether they’re scrolling TikTok at midnight or firing off a quick LinkedIn update during their lunch break. In fact, 75% of job seekers use social media to scope out their next opportunity, I know I use TikTok as the new Google! Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn give you the perfect stage to show off your company’s personality, share what makes you great, and spark genuine connections. Think of it like dropping hints in a trending TikTok sound—you’re creating buzz, so candidates are intrigued before you even post that "We’re hiring" update. Plus, targeted ads and smart algorithms let you get your openings in front of the right people faster than you can say "For You page."

How important is it for a company’s social media feed to portray their company culture to potential job applicants?

It’s crucial. A company’s social media feed acts like a window into their workplace—it’s where job seekers look to get a sense of what it’s like to work there. 86% of employees say company culture is one of the biggest factors influencing where they choose to work. By showcasing your values, team dynamics, and day-to-day atmosphere, you help potential applicants imagine themselves in your workplace. Whether it’s celebrating employee milestones, sharing behind-the-scenes moments, or highlighting diversity and inclusion efforts, an authentic portrayal of your culture can inspire trust and attract candidates who align with your vision.

How can businesses use social media to advertise their job opportunities?

The key is to go beyond just posting a link to your careers page. Start by creating visually engaging content tailored to each platform—think short videos for TikTok, carousel posts on Instagram, or professional updates on LinkedIn. Use eye-catching captions that outline the role while showcasing why working at your company is exciting. Don’t forget to use relevant hashtags to increase discoverability. Platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn also offer paid job ads that allow you to target specific demographics, ensuring your opportunities reach the right audience.

Why is it important to feature real-life examples of career development?

Sharing real-life examples of career development shows that your company invests in its people, and it’s exactly the kind of content that builds trust with job seekers. Whether it’s a TikTok series like "From Intern to Director" or a blog featuring team testimonials, these stories inspire candidates by showing them a clear path for their own growth.

In fact, companies with strong internal mobility retain employees twice as long as those without, according to LinkedIn. Featuring these success stories demonstrates that career progression at your organisation isn’t just a buzzword—it’s achievable and supported. Imagine having candidates lined up for the job rather than you chasing the right one!
