Teesside, a region renowned for its industrial heritage, is witnessing transformation on an impressive scale, thanks to work happening across the region to decarbonise and meet net zero emissions.

This evolutionary leap isn't just a testament to the region's commitment to environmental sustainability but also showcases how innovation can rejuvenate industrial areas, and the positive impact net zero industries can have on local employment prospects.

Leading the charge towards this green revolution are initiatives like Teesworks, home of the UK’s largest Freeport, carbon capture technologies, and innovative strategies aimed at decarbonising heavy industry and capturing up to 10 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.

This week Teesside is taking over the news again, with the announcement that Net Zero Teesside, the world’s first gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage, has been given the final green light to press on with construction. It follows a £4bn financial investment from BP And Equinor, with construction expected to start mid-2025 for a 2028 start-up timescale.

Amidst these advancements, NRL's Teesside Recruitment team is playing a pivotal role in sourcing the right talent to fuel these initiatives, always keeping a keen eye on how their region is evolving and reshaping because of the significant employment benefits it will provide for their candidates.

Spearheading industrial transformation on Teesworks

At the heart of Teesside's net zero transformation is Teesworks, the UK's largest industrial zone. This significant site is not just a hub for innovation but is also pivotal in championing sustainable industrial practices.

On the South Bank a new structure is coming to life that will house SeAH Wind’s new monopile manufacturing facility, providing a state-of-the art factory for fabricating offshore wind turbine bases. The 1.13 million ft2 facility will provide skilled employment opportunities throughout the construction build, as well as permanent positions to support the manufacturing process once operational.

Extensive work will also need to be done to connect the new facilities on Teesworks to the grid, including a programme to create the largest wire network in the UK. The £100m project will be delivered by newly formed Steel River Power, and NRL’s Teesside team are delighted to have joined forces with them as their recruitment partner to help operate and maintain the High Voltage network that will connect businesses on Teesworks.

The strategic edge of Teesside Freeport

The Teesside Freeport is another cornerstone in the region's ambitious net zero strategy. As a designated area offering special economic incentives, the Freeport is expected to become a magnet for businesses aligned with the UK’s net zero vision. This initiative not only boosts local economy and employment but also positions Teesside as a key player.

Using carbon capture to support decarbonisation

An important element of the Teesworks net zero strategy is the adoption of Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) technologies. By capturing carbon emissions from industrial processes and either utilising them or safely storing them underground, Teesside is tackling one of the biggest challenges in achieving net zero: decarbonising heavy industry.

This technology not only mitigates the environmental impact but also ensures that industries can continue to thrive in a sustainable manner.

Supporting local businesses

Amidst these technological and economic shifts, the demand for skilled workforce to drive these projects is very much welcomed. NRL's Teesside Recruitment team is at the forefront, ensuring that businesses embarking on net zero and low carbon projects have access to the talent they need.

By connecting skilled professionals with pioneering companies, NRL is facilitating the transition to a greener future. Divisional Manager Allan Stevenson reflects on the positive impact net zero plans are having on the region.

“I’ve lived in Teesside all my life, so it’s extremely rewarding to see the fantastic progress happening at Teesworks and across the wider region to progress with decarbonisation and net zero projects.

As a recruitment team we’re already excited by the fantastic roles we’ve been able to place our candidates in, and we know these opportunities are going to continue to increase across 2025 and the years to come.

We’re passionate about using this huge employment drive to get as many people as possible into work, including working with community initiatives that reach the younger generation, to get them thinking about their careers and what they want to do in the future. Because the opportunities that are being created right now in the region, will provide jobs for decades to come – and that’s the most exciting prospect.”
