Candidates care about your business's environmental impact – as NRL’s Egremont Director Rebecca Graves discussed with In-Cumbria business magazine.

In today's competitive job market, discerning candidates are placing growing importance on the environmental ethos of their prospective employers. This shift underscores the increased demand for businesses not only to embrace low carbon energy alternatives but also to be transparent about their own environmental impact. This is where companies like NRL, a technical and engineering recruitment business based in Egremont, see a clear advantage for businesses looking to attract a wider mix of candidates.

NRL supports engineering clients with projects pivotal to the energy transition to net zero, as well as making considerable steps to minimise their own environmental impact. It’s something that they say is becoming important to candidates, as Director Rebecca Graves discusses.

“With a maturing workforce, businesses are now aiming to attract younger talent through structured training programmes that provide them with career development opportunities. Huge efforts are also being made to be more flexible for parents looking for a better work-life balance that is family friendly. Whilst historically candidates may not have considered the environmental impact of a company they’re interviewing with, today it’s increasingly becoming important as they care about the world they live in and the one their children will inherit.

People want to know that the business they work for has a strong moral compass when it comes to the environment. Whether that’s investing financially to develop green energy solutions, or making improvements to how they deliver their services to limit their environmental impact.

Many organisations are already considering more far-reaching metrics than simply financial measures when monitoring their business, including their carbon footprint. It’s something we’ve committed to within the NRL Group for many years now. We continually look for ways to further reduce our carbon emissions, with the help of carbon champions across our business identifying improvement initiatives. We purchase carbon credits to offset unavoidable emissions, which rewards us with the Carbon Neutral International Standard certification. We’ve been doing this for four years now and as a result have seen carbon emissions reduce by over one tonne per employee. That’s something we’re extremely proud to tell candidates when they interview for roles to join the NRL Group.”

Operating within the engineering industry, NRL has seen first-hand the appetite from candidates to join forward thinking businesses who prioritise green energy production and sustainable construction. Candidates are looking to transfer their skills from traditional energy production into renewable energy and low carbon sectors, as well as seeking work with businesses who put their environmental agenda at the forefront of their operations. Demonstrating to candidates that your organisation takes their carbon footprint seriously is a great way of helping candidates see your company culture and values when they are considering joining your business.
