Like our clients who support energy transition projects across the globe, we’re on our own environmental journey to make a positive impact on the world. That’s why each year we report and offset our carbon emissions.
Throughout the year carbon champions across our offices and regional branches identify ways to further reduce our emissions, aiming to bring down our footprint each time we work with the expert team at One Carbon World to record and verify our annual footprint. To offset unavoidable emissions, we purchase carbon credits to use through the UN Clean Development Mechanism, an initiative that connects businesses with global projects that are making a positive impact on the climate challenge.
Offsetting our 2023 carbon emissions
Working with One Carbon World, we identified an energy project in Indonesia which we immediately recognised as being aligned to our own work we undertake with clients, helping them with renewable and green energy projects across the globe.
The project, building a new hydroelectric power plant in Indonesia, which is currently under construction.
This project, a run-of-river plant, is not only a crucial energy infrastructure development for the country it also provides a tangible alternative to offset fossil fuel use and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Harnessing Indonesian Rivers for positive change
The new hydroelectric plant, promises zero emission power generation, directly supplying the Indonesian electricity grid. Unlike traditional fossil fuel-based generation methods, the run-of-river technology does not impound large volumes of water, thereby minimising ecological disruptions while harnessing the natural flow of a river to generate electricity. The impact on local communities is significant – by displacing fossil fuel-fired generation, the project improves air quality, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and creates a local source of renewable energy that supports the national grid’s stability and growth potential.
For businesses, reliable and eco-friendly power provides an opportunity to engage in sustainable practices - an increasingly critical aspect of international trade and investment. Whilst local homes can expect access to cleaner energy, a fundamental shift that promises to enrich lives and better the community
Through additional work included within the social program, residents will benefit from the construction of additional infrastructure and roads and the plant will provide the adjacent town with free electricity.
The global mission for zero emissions
Globally, the shift to low carbon and zero emission energy sources like the Indonesian hydroelectric plant is not just critical - it is essential for our collective future. Projects like these mitigate climate change impact and align with global efforts to achieve net zero emissions. They serve as significant contributors to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in achieving affordable and clean energy, creating sustainable cities, and combating climate change.
Working with One Carbon World
One Carbon World play a pivotal role in assisting businesses like ours with their journey towards carbon neutrality. Their comprehensive support calculates our carbon footprint, provides clear and concise reporting, and independently verifies our carbon emissions. Crucially, One Carbon World also support us to purchase and invest the required carbon credits to offset unavoidable emissions and secure the Carbon Neutral International Standard each year. It's this accountability and structured process that allows companies to go beyond mere compliance; empowering them to become proactive environmental stewards and ensuring environmental objectives hold the same level of importance as financial metrics when measuring their continued success.
