In October 2018 SSE and Siemens broke ground on the new Keadby 2 project, the most efficient CCGT power station under construction in the UK.
Whilst still in its early stages, work has continued to progress on-site so NRL Group Director Greg Compton takes a look at the project in more detail.
Project Snapshot
Developer: SSE
Partner: Siemens
Value of project: £350 million investment
What is Keadby 2?
Keady 2 is a new Combined Cycle Gas Turbine power station being constructed on land adjacent to the existing power station. It will be a single gas turbine with its associated boiler and single exhaust stack supplying a single steam turbine. Keadby 2 will add up to 710MW of electrical output to the existing 735MW potential generating capacity from Keadby.
SSE has partnered with industry-leading technology provider Siemens to introduce this first of a kind, high efficiency gas-fired generation technology. Once completed, Keadby 2 will be the most efficient CCGT on the UK power system.
During the peak of construction activity up to 490 contractors may be required. The average number of workers required over the three year construction period will be approximately 150.
Progress on-site
The main civils work commenced on site in April 2019, with the construction of foundations and walls for the cooling tower, turbine buildings and auxiliary structures.
Key development work on the local road infrastructure has also been completed to create a ring road around the site. Whilst work is also well underway to build on-site accommodation, including temporary power and water connections.
As the project continues to progress, we expect extensive labour skills to be required on-site, so make sure you’ve registered your interest in a role at Keadby 2 with our Wigan recruitment team.
