Job Title: Senior Secondary Applications Engineer – STAFF Position

Location: Birmingham, UK

About the role:

As a core member of the UK Engineering Team and will contribute towards the effective operation of projects and design protection and Control System.

Experience and remit required:

  • Design of secondary systems, control, and protection up to 400kV to meet contract requirements.

  • Enable effective project delivery by preparation and verification of:

  • Design Intent Documents (DID).

  • Tech Specs / RFQs for Plant and P&C equipment.

  • Secondary designs including SLD, KLD, AC & DC distribution systems, battery and battery chargers sizing, voltage drop, cable sizing, signal lists, setting calculation, interface lists, cable block diagrams, multicore & fiber optic cable schedules, and cables core sheets, etc.

  • Specifying CTs & VTs in terms of electrical characteristics and physical size.

  • Approving supplier designs for a wide range of equipment and packages, including data sheets, loads consumption, scheme drawings, circuit diagrams, wiring diagrams, etc., and incorporating vendor information into the design.

  • Support PreFAT / FAT and commissioning activities.

  • Provide technical support for tendering, working within defined budgetary objectives, and assisting in preparing proposals and presentations for engineering projects by creating Work Breakdown Structures, providing bills of materials, estimated engineering & drafting hours, and other necessary details.

  • List, report and address all noted deviations to the engineering specifications, plan and suggest corrective actions. Clarifying potential issues or providing solutions to correct engineering errors in cooperation with the engineering manager.

  • Offer a flexible approach to work tasks and be prepared to work additional hours when necessary to ensure the successful delivery of the project.

  • To mentor other team members as required.

  • Participate in design and hazard review meetings and ensuring design risk assessments/HAZID’s are in place for all design solutions and residual risks are passed on to the H&S file. Positively influence design and construction safety performance and aims for zero accidents.

  • Coordinating with the client, project management, primary and civil engineering teams, as well as other interfaces, to ensure the delivery of high-quality technical outputs within the agreed delivery timescales and budget.

Experienced Required:

  • Minimum qualification of a bachelor's or master's degree in electrical or electronics engineering, with extensive years of experience in transmission and distribution (ranging from 11kV to 400kV).

  • Experience as a Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE) / Lead Contractor Design Approval Engineer (LCDAE), as defined by National Grid's NG/ET/SR188 procedure will be an advantage.

  • Member of the IET or equivalent Professional Body; Chartered status (through IET) status or working towards is desirable.

  • Proficiency in generating and comprehensive understanding of engineering design, particularly in secondary engineering for GIS and AIS substations

  • Understanding / Knowledge of Distribution Network Operator / National Grid etc. standards and drawing practices.

  • Good knowledge in communication protocols used in automation systems like IEC101, IEC104, IEC61850, security standards (IEC 62443, ISO 27019), technologies and best practices for substation automation engineering ideally with multiple vendors.

  • Demonstrable HSQE management knowledge including CDM requirements is desirable.

  • Understanding of electronic records management systems.
