About our Ultrasonic Testing services

NRL’s ultrasonic testing discipline is our longest running service to the rail industry. Our service includes the safety critical testing of the rail by our fully competent Ultrasonic Rail Flaw Detection Operatives (URFDO) who examine the rails and locate defects through the use of testing techniques.

With more and more demand for rail services, ultrasonic testing is becoming an increasingly critical aspect of maintaining safety on the railway – allowing us to identify any potential cracks in the rail and rectify any defects before they have the chance to cause an accident.

URFDO inspections identify

  • Rail head damage
  • Vertical Longitudinal Splitting (VLS)
  • Significant rail corrosion
  • Lipping on rail adjustment switches
  • Areas of rolling contact fatigue (RCF)

Our in-house standards and compliance team provide our URFDO’s with the relevant minimum action codes (MAC) to ensure the correct course of action is applied, dependent upon the type of rail defect identified.
