To assist the Senior Occupational Hygienist with the assessment of exposures to physical, chemical and biological agents in the working place, the management of control measures so the DRDL operation can be conducted without detrimental effect to the health of the workforce in accordance with legislation and best practice, whilst providing ongoing advice about compliance to Occupational Hygiene related legislation.
Principal Tasks and Responsibilities
SHEF Occupational Hygienist principal tasks and responsibilities are:
Advise Devonport management and employees on compliance with relevant legislation e.g. COSHH, Noise, Vibration, Lead and Asbestos Regulations and in-house standards.
Conduct workplace inspections to check compliance status and identify potentially harmful activities.
Assess health risks as required under the above legislation, including, where appropriate, measurement of levels of exposure to harmful substances, noise, vibration etc.
Investigate and research suitable and cost effective measures to prevent or reduce exposure levels as necessary, e.g. by process change, ventilation, respirators, protective equipment etc.
Manage Occupational hygiene information held, notably the risk assessments made under the above legislations.
Provide provision and training to Devonport personnel and others with relevant duties under legislation and in-house standards e.g. Managers, FLM’s, Leading Hands etc.
Administer the calibration process for equipment held by the SHEF department.
Qualifications and Experience Requirements
Desirable - Degree Level or equivalent in a science subject.
Hold or agree to train for the BOHS examinations of Professional Competence in Occupational Hygiene.
