Job Description:
NRL are currently recruiting for a Senior ETCS Engineer, for work on HS2, to be based in London Euston on a long-term contract.



About the role:
The Senior Signalling & Automatic Train Operation Engineer is responsible for developing the technical standards, requirements and specifications to which the system will be designed and constructed as outlined in the CCS strategy.

The role sits in the Railway Systems Engineering Team within the Chief Engineers Department, Infrastructure Directorate.
The Chief Engineers Department is the Design Authority for the HS2 programme, identifying, developing and evaluating key design, strategy, engineering and environmental decisions to provide a clear direction and leadership.
The Chief Engineers Department leads the integration of the railway at the system level, such that operations, infrastructure and rolling stock work as one to serve the passenger and surrounding communities.
The Railway Systems team provide technical leadership for track, control, command and signalling, acoustics, power and mechanical and electrical engineering.  Its main objective is to provide a railway that is safe and capable of meeting the operational performance criteria using a cross discipline approach considering both railway systems and the wider railway environment.

  • Leading the engagement and management of stakeholders to ensure a holistic approach for development of engineering solutions.
  • Providing technical assurance for Signalling & Automatic Train Operation Systems.
  • Provide LoD Level 1 technical input against designated systems.
  • Working closely with the wider operations and engineering disciplines to develop the Signalling & Automatic Train Operation Systems solutions that consider all relevant systems and sub-systems.
  • Lead the development of requirements, specifications and standards which deliver railway capability, while mitigating environmental impacts, within the programme and budget.
  • Lead the development of technical solutions involving proof of concept.
  • Act as the technical lead for commercially sensitive aspects such as tender evaluations.
  • Lead the management of technical risk for the Signalling & Automatic Train Operation Systems works.
  • Providing technical expertise and advice relating to the Signalling & Automatic Train Operation Systems to the wider project organisation and external stakeholders.
  • Manage engineering aspects of work packages and suppliers, as required.

  • The job holder will shape the technical solutions to meet the operational, technical and functional requirements of HS2 Signalling & Automatic Train Operation Systems.
  • No direct budgetary management responsibility.
  • No internal line management responsibility; works with teams of professional services consultancy staff and within matrix organisation structure to provide project deliverables.
  • Interfacing and integration – prior to award of the Railway Systems delivery contracts, the Railway Systems team acts as the system specifier taking responsibility for all railway systems integration as the civil design progresses, associated interfaces and operational concepts are developed.  The team will then retain ultimate accountably for successful railway systems integration after contract award.
  • Changing environment – By its nature HS2 is a complex, rapidly changing project environment where flexibility is a cornerstone of successful delivery.  Personnel and project teams must remain agile and prepared to work in a changing setting while working towards sometimes competing and conflicting objectives

What you will need:
SKILLS
  • Technical skills to develop robust, traceable technical requirements to facilitate successful execution of engineering contracts.
  • Collaborative working with suppliers to develop technical solutions from operational and technical requirements.
  • Presentation skills to deliver complex written and oral communications and presentations suitable for a broad audience and a diverse group of stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage time and prioritise workloads appropriately.

KNOWLEDGE
  • Degree, or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Chartered professional status or working towards chartership.
  • Good understanding of Signalling & Automatic Train Operation Systems and their relationship to railway operations.
  • Understanding of Signalling & Automatic Train Operation system design integration and commissioning processes.
  • Understanding of development, design and construction of Signalling & Automatic Train Operation Systems projects.
  • Understanding of Railway Systems Assurance processes and the application of the Common Safety Method, Risk Assessment process (CSM-RA).
  • Awareness of relevant modelling software and its role in engineering solution development.

TYPE OF EXPERIENCE
  • Development or delivery of Signalling & Automatic Train Operation Systems associated with modern railways or similar client organisations.
  • Working knowledge of the application of technical standards, both national and international, which apply Signalling & Automatic Train Operation Systems and railway system design and operation.
  • Working knowledge of the technical issues associated with current and future Signalling & Automatic Train Operation Systems technology.
  • Working as part of a multidisciplinary management team within a large, complex project
  • Establishment of requirements and evaluation of proposed solutions.
  • Project planning and organisation to meet significant project deadlines.
